Campus Walk
Campus Walk, reprise
Sunday, 27 October 2013
Another fine autumn day this morning. We started down on Oxford Street and walked in the reverse direction. Here’s the map from last year.
There were quite a few people walking around, and signs indicated there were three conferences going on. When we got up close to Sproul Plaza, the large crane caught our attention.
There is a Lower Sproul beautification project going on. Eshelman Hall, one of the ugliest buildings on campus, has been razed.
We continued up towards the Campanile and the Faculty Club. The old log cabin building has blue plastic on the roof—the thing is in terrible condition.
Up near Lewis Hall, we saw that the Greek Theater is having work done on it. By Stanley Hall, the long staircase down was closed for some reason, so we just moved on to Founder’s Rock and down Hearst Street.
As we came down what we once called Cardiac Hill towards Doe Library, we saw another couple of construction cranes, working on a new Campbell Hall. Campbell Hall was up there with Eshelman Hall as being quite unattractive.
In the picture, you can see four people way up on the crane.
We continued our walk downhill, back towards the starting point on Oxford. Sure enough, another building has been razed (leaving the facade). The University Art Museum will be moving from Bancroft Way over to this site.
The building that was demolished printed the documents used in the founding of the United Nations in San Francisco.
Here’s a link to our earlier entry on Walk #5.
There are not many steps in this walk, but it’s good exercise with the hilly campus. We saw several buildings being constructed on this walk—new sights from last year.
Next—Holy Hill, on the northside of the University of California campus.
