The Presidio, Part One
The Presidio, Part One
Sunday, 14 February 2010
It was 52 degrees, sunny at our starting point, but the fog horns were going on the bridge.
We picked up where we left off last time, at 25th Avenue and El Camino del Mar, one entrance into the Presidio.
The walk starts on Lincoln Boulevard, which is not as nice as a trail. Still, the views were nice. This photograph also shows how bright a day it was.
Not far up the street, we could look back towards the area around the Museum of the Palace of the Legion of Honor and Lincoln Park Golf Course where we were last week. There is a lot of water in the air today; tough on telephoto. The waves were really going.
We left the paved road (and thus the 49 mile drive route) for the scenic Coastal Trail and went down a long flight of steps to Battery Crosby. The fog is right on top of the bridge and the fog horns were easy to hear.
Here’s a nice canyon down to the surf.
We are getting closer to the Golden Gate Bridge, and the fog seems to be pretty much right on the road bed. This area has a lot of non native vegetation, and there is a big effort at digging the exotics out.
You can see the moisture in the air makes for a weak telephoto shot. Still, it is worth a look.
Close to the bridge was this notice of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. I had no idea we’d run across it. It’s 1,200 miles long across Arizona and California, and could be our next Long Walk.
I hadn’t been to the little park at the south side of the bridge in decades. Nothing much has changed. Lots of tourists from all over the world are there.
We had two friends with us, and at this point one said, “You can’t see the bridge.” That’s very odd, because in fact, it should be in this picture.
In this picture, you can just see the top of the south tower as the air clears for a second.
We took the 28 bus down Park Presidio to California Street and lunch at Burma Superstar.
We’ve covered about nine miles; forty to go. Today’s walk on the map:
From out last stop in Sea Cliff, we proceeded north through the Presidio to the Golden Gate Bridge. Next, we’ll go east through the center of the Presidio, and then out to the Palace of Fine Arts.
