After lunch, we left Cody, Wyoming for Red Lodge, Montana. We are going to drive on both the Chief Joseph Highway and a section of the Beartooth Highway.
The Chief Joseph Highway has great scenery and a lot of switchbacks.
Clouds washed out some color as we climbed up the mountains on the Beartooth Highway. Here we are above the tree line.
Two more photos up on the Beartooth Highway. We’ll be coming back this way tomorrow morning, and the sun might be shining. But the weather changes fast here; it could just as easily snow!
Wildlife trying to stay warm.
The map shows some of the switchbacks on the Beartooth Highway.
Red Lodge is not far past the last set of switchbacks.
Red Lodge, according to our guidebook, was a coal mining center around the time of the First World War. Then the coal ran out. The town’s buildings are still standing and are well preserved. We didn’t take any photos, though, because the main street was dug up for a new sewer line.
We visited the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary, which takes care of animals which have been orphaned or injured, and cannot be released back in the wild. YWS has quite a collection, running from a one–eyed owl (barb wire) to black bears. At the time of writing, the web site for YWS isn’t working, but they might get it fixed, so we’re leaving the link.
We drove north out of Cody to Red Lodge, Montana.
Next—a drive back on the Beartooth Highway and back into Yellowstone Park, then on to Bozeman, Montana.
The Chief Joseph Highway is burgundy colored and the Beartooth Highway is a bright violet/blue on the map. Here’s the view not far out of Cody.
