After breakfast, we hiked out to what looks like a giant cave, but is actually another exfoliation of rock. It was cloudy, but beautiful.
After the hike, we drove down to Page, Arizona.
Here’s the map showing our hotel, the state line, the city of Page (next to the Glen Canyon Reservoir) and Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River (camera pin). There is a giant coal fired power plant just east of Page; it can be seen on the map or better, with satellite view.
Before we got to Page, we stopped at the visitor’s center for the dam. We walked across the bridge to get a picture of the dam and of the river. The bridge is 700 feet above the river!
We drove south a few more miles to the short trail that goes out to Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River. It became clear fairly soon into the walk that there is a drop off!
We did not get any closer to the edge! The drop is 1,000 feet down to the river.
Here is most of the Horseshoe! Crazy photographers got more of it, risking a fall.
On the way back to the hotel, we stopped at Wahweap Bay on the reservoir. Lots of houseboats were tied up at the marina. The second photo shows more of the remarkable scenery, and more boats (at the bottom of the photo).
The coal–fired generating station is a landmark in the area.
When we got back to the hotel, the sun was out and we walked along another trail.
Each afternoon, the clouds build up and then it rains, really hard! This is a large rock by our hotel.
This is the same rock. After the thunder and lightening started, a waterfall developed.
The next morning, we went out for another hike, this time to a slot canyon.
We made it to the “canyon” here—our maps shows the slot canyon is not far ahead. However, there is water in the canyon, probably running from last night’s big rainstorm.
Alas, we didn’t get to the slot canyon, because there was no way to get up and over this small waterfall—the rocks were quite slippery.
We turned around and took another trail back to the hotel.
Later that afternoon we went to the Big Water Visitor Center, but the interior exhibits were closed. We enjoyed the views and headed back to the hotel, where we got this photo after turning off the highway.
The huge rock looks like the top of a chicken’s head!
Hiking around the hotel and a trip across the state line to Page, Arizona to have a look at the Colorado River.
