Uxmal

Friday–Sunday March 10–12, 2006

This serpent is an example of the decoration on the buildings at Uxmal. At one time, about 800 AD, the city had 25,000 residents. It was abandoned about 1200 AD.

Just as at Monte Alban, all of the buildings at Uxmal sit on raised platforms. The pyramid was a temple and has interior rooms.

The Jaguar Throne and the Palace of the Governors.

The Quadrangle is large—there is a person in the photo at the top of the steps on the right side.

The impressive pyramid at Uxmal is 115 feet high.

Uxmal, another Mayan city, has many important archaeological sites. It was abandoned about 1200 AD and is now a national park and a Unesco World Heritage site. It is one of the most impressive Mayan sites in Mexico.

Next—the nearby Puuc area (Kabah, Sayil and Labna) and Mayapan.
