Dzibilchaltún, Yucatán

Wednesday, March 8, 2006

This is the so–called House of the Seven Dolls. Apparently its windows were used for determining the dates of each equinox and solstice.

Here is the same structure from a distance. The Yucatán is flat, and resembles nearby Florida.

The water supply for Dzibilchaltún came from this cenote, a sink hole in the limestone. The water is quite clear and appreciated by many visitors who cool off in the natural swimming pool.

As was the case at Monte Alban, much of the area developed by the Mayans has not been excavated. This photo shows an unexcavated site at Dzibilchaltún.

Dzibilchaltún was a Mayan city, dating back to the 8th century.

Next—Uxmal.
