Piemonte and an Enoteca

Thursday, October 19, 2006

Dinner in Pollenzo on Tuesday evening was at a famous restaurant, Guido. We had fennel soup; fonduta with white truffles; stracotto di vitello; risotto with white truffle; and young goat roasted with rosemary. Dessert was a pistaccio parfait with spicy caramel sauce.

This photo was taken in the rain outside the castle at Grinzane Cavour.

The regional enoteca inside the castle was warm and dry. At such an enoteca one can buy a glass of wine for a reasonable charge or buy a bottle to take home. The wines generally are only from the surrounding local area.

Lunch was in the city of Bra. We ate at the restaurant run by Slow Food and which is above its offices. The chief executive appeared, ordered lunch and ate it in an unslow way. Perhaps he is in a hurry today with the approach of the Slow Food convention in a few days.

The restaurant was very good and not expensive. We had vegetable soup with beans; a vegetable tart with fondutta; and tajarin (really eggy flat noodles) with sage and butter sauce.

We arrived in the tiny village of Pollenzo late in the afternoon on Tuesday. We toured several castles in Piemonte that have been restored to good condition and have rooms put to use for wine tasting and sales.

Next—the famous wine village of Barolo.
