South towards Tarangire
Monday, 14 July 2008
After our second night on the Crater rim, we went back down, again, to the Crater floor for a few hours, and then, after lunch, we drove out of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Our destination was not far, Plantation Lodge. We stayed up on the rim of the Crater, where we saw visiting zebras and in one case, a Cape Buffalo. The hotel staff directed us to an “alternate route” to let the buffalo graze near the office. The staff used to throw rocks at buffalo which got in the way, but that did not work very well, as the buffalo are not passive when attacked. Cooler heads prevailed and now guests take alternative routes.
In the morning we drove down to the Crater floor for a few hours to look again for animals. The light was still weak from a thick cloud cover, but we did see rhinos and lions.
Here is one more picture of a lion, with a tiny bit of flowers around her.
The drive to Plantation Lodge did not take all that long. We took a tour of the grounds to see the coffee, barley, sorghum and maize. The wild animal we saw during our brief stay was a large turkey being chased by the staff. We were, temporarily, back in civilization.
Next—an early morning departure for Tarangire National Park via Lake Manyara National Park.
