Tarragona

WednesdayThursday September 15–16, 2010

Again, we managed to get the Focus out of the subterranean garage in Girona without hitting anything, and drove south to Tarragona. Here is the map. Tarragona is just off the lower left. We passed through Barcelona one last time.

Between Sant Feliu de Guixols and Blanes the coast is rugged. We passed some little towns that were filled with many identical, boxy houses. We also saw some attractive towns. This one is Tossa de Mar.

After 150 miles we pulled into Tarragona, and the GPS was a help again. We unpacked and set out for the Imperial Roman area, another World Heritage site. Here is the amphitheater, from the second century AD.

Tarragona was the big Roman city in Spain, and the ruins are impressive.

Here’s a mix of styles. The tower is from the first century AD.

Several blocks away, the city has grown up around a local forum.

This Medusa mosaic in the Museu Nacional Arqueológic de Tarragona is in good shape.

This is Castellarnau House, built at the end of the 15th century. Charles I lived here in 1542. Below is the kitchen.

Here’s a pleasant square filled with people having dinner.

After a long drive, we visited the Roman ruins in Tarragona.

Next—A day trip to see two monasteries and more Roman ruins just outside of the city.
