Jaen

The view of the mountains as we crossed into Andalucía was nothing short of spectacular. Unfortunately, there was nowhere to pull over to take a photo.

Our hotel, the Parador Jaen, was an Arab castle until 1246, when it was captured by the Christians. It is easy to spot from anywhere in the city, as it it way up on a mountain.

The view from the Parador of a part of Jaen and surrounding countryside:

After checking in, we drove out to see two cities that are on the World Heritage list, Úbeda and Baeza. We parked near Úbeda’s Sacra Capilla del Salvador.

It was time to start taking pictures of doors.

Many of the buildings are attractive.

A nice street in Úbeda.

Onward to Baeza.

Baeza was more appealing than larger Úbeda.

In both cities, there was usually art over the doors.

This is an great old palace, now a college.

Here is our first good look at olive trees in the area.

The next morning we got up ready to go down the mountain and start taking pictures of olives in the bright sun, but it was foggy! We are heading down, and hoping for a break.

We are going to look at Úbeda and Baeza, millions of olive trees and the city of Jaen.

Next—Cordoba.
