French Polynesia

April 27-May 6, 2007

We traveled to French Polynesia in late April/early May 2007, spending about ten days on three Islands. Here is the routing, covering a distance of 4,444 miles.

We flew through Los Angeles and Papeete to Moorea, arriving early in the morning and happy to find our overwater bungalow was ready for check-in. The resort was beautiful and we had nice weather for lounging and snorkeling right off our deck. We saw many beautiful fish and corals. There was even a window in the floor of the room to watch fish swim by. The lagoon was no deeper than about five feet in most places.  We took a kayak out to the edge of the reef one day.

View back to the island from our bungalow. Below is a photo from the resort gardens.

One day we rented a car and drove around the island. We drove to this viewpoint. Below is another photo from our round the island drive.

Here are a couple more pictures around the island.

After five nights in Moorea, we flew to the neighboring island of Bora Bora, about an hour flight. There we were taken by boat to another resort with overwater rooms. Most of the resorts in Bora Bora are not on the island but out on the fringing reefs with little land area.

The above was taken on the boat ride to the resort. Note the spray. Below is the small resort beach.

We snorkeled off our bungalow here too, but the weather was rainy, and the lagoon much deeper. So we had better viewing in Moorea, although we saw some bigger critters here (like a scary moray eel). This the view around the bungalows and below that to the horizon.

Sunsets on both islands were spectacular, this from Moorea.

We spent one night on Tahiti before the tortuous journey home via LAX.This map shows the locations of the three islands.
