We left very early on Wednesday morning for the border with Guatamala. Our hotel car dropped us off there, and we presented our passports to the authorities as we walked across the border and were met by a second car with a guide to take us to Tikal, a National Park.
Tikal is a World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is an ancient Mayan city, with a population of up to 90,000. It is located in a rain forest, and, well, it is quite remarkable!
The tops of some of the structures were well visited and offered views of the rainforest. Some had helpful staircases.
The three temple towers in our photo were in a Star Wars movie!
We also saw some interesting animals at the site.
Here is an artsy stone face!
We spent most of the day at Tikal and got back to our lodging about sunset. The next morning, we did a bird watching walk and took a guided canoe trip in the afternoon on the Macal River.
On Friday, we will be headed out to an island to the north of Belize City to enjoy the warm ocean. Along the way, we will visit the Belize Zoo.
Tikal on the map is at the red “castle” icon. Our lodging is at the reddish circle with a bed symbol.
