Susa, on the Road to the Alps

Sunday & Monday, October 22-23, 2006

The weather was still dreary but the vineyard were still pretty.

We visited the colorful Sol Le Witt chapel out in the countryside before heading to Susa.

The Arch of Augustus was built in 8 B.C. and is in very good condition.

The arch in the background of the upper photo was built around 400 AD. It was the support for an aqueduct that brought water to Susa.

This Romanesque campanile was built in the 11th Century and is attached to a church that may have the darkest interior in the country.

Susa is west of Torino, along a Roman road leading to the Alps and France. Besides the Arch of Augustus, there is a Roman amphitheater from the 2nd Century in good condition.

Next—the Sacra di San Michele and then to Torino and Salone del Gusto.
