Arenal Volcano
Monday, 12 January 2009
Arenal Volcano is active and dangerous. At night it is possible to see lava and there are rumbles heard several kilometers away throughout the day.
After we checked in to our hotel we went for a hilly climb around the property. The area is in a wet forest.
Just as with the first hotel, the landscaping at Arenal was very well done.
The photo above was taken on one of the trails near our hotel. The water and color are really amazing.
Here is another photo taken out on the trail.
Not far up the trail we came across Howler monkeys in nearby trees. Wildlife is protected in Costa Rica, and the monkeys were not afraid of being close to humans.
Arenal Volcano was hidden in the clouds today. Tomorrow we’ll see the peak, perhaps.
Our excellent driver picked us up from our cliffside hotel and drove us a few hours north (through a chilly cloud forest) to a new hotel near the Arenal National Park and its volcano.
Next—a trip up the canyon to see the forest from the tops of the trees.
