Port Douglas, Queensland
Monday–Tuesday October 31–November 1, 2005
We bought tickets on a boat (the Poseidon, of course) to take us from Port Douglas out to the Great Barrier Reef. Thirty miles off shore and one is able to snorkel and take a picture of a blue clam.
The view from the stern of the Poseidon. The gentleman on the left is getting a burn; the woman in white is not.
We took a walking tour at an Aboriginal reserve near Mossman, in a sugar cane area, near Port Douglas. Our guide showed us that may of the plants in this photo have uses. Others can rip into flesh with sharp hooks or cause pain from burns if accidently touched.
Farther up the Mossman River we came to this beautiful spot, which is too high up for crocodiles to be a threat to swimmers.
At the Daintree Wild Zoo, this creature came rushing up to make inquiries of us about just when to expect breakfast. Other wildlife were many different birds, including the very large cassowary, koalas and crocodiles.
Port Douglas offers the visitor a selection of boats to take out to snorkel at the Great Barrier Reef. Also nearby is the Mossman River area, and a zoo where local animals and birds may be seen.
Next—Cape Tribulation, Daintree National Park and more of the Great Barrier Reef.
