Day Trip to Colonia, Uruguay

Tuesday, 20 November 2007

We returned to Buenos Aires from El Calafate, and the next day went down to the ferry terminal to catch a boat for the one hour ride across the Estuary to Colonia del Sacramento, another World Heritage site. But to board, one has to go through an immigration process, which involves leaving Argentina and entering Uruguay. That takes time, and the process is reversed on the other side. We had budgeted four hours to walk around the town and to have lunch, which turned out to be more than adequate.

Colonia has an old and well preserved section of buildings that reflects its Portuguese heritage. Traffic is very light and the drivers are polite, a nice change from Buenos Aires. The setting is attractive.

The town:

Next—back to Buenos Aires for a day and, yes, more beef, and then out to the International Airport for the 16–hour flight home via Atlanta.
