North to Anchorage

Sunday—Monday July 6-7, 2014

We drove north, back to Anchorage, via Girdwood. Zoom in to see the route.

After checking in to our hotel, we walked around the city to get a feel for it. The next morning, we drove over to the Alaska Zoo to see animals we had missed on the trip.

Here is a nice looking polar bear.

How big is an adult moose? Here is one waiting to be fed a treat by a zoo employee.

A Canadian lynx.

A musk ox eyes the photographer.

Here is a snowy owl.

We finally saw a gray wolf. There are six or so at the zoo. They were difficult to photograph, as they don’t sit still for very long.

This is a Dall Sheep. We saw quite a few at Denali on a rainy day.

And a curious mountain goat.

In the afternoon, we visited the Anchorage Museum. There is an exhibit about the 1964 earthquake (50 years ago) that was an eye opener. Magnitude 9.2. Tsunami waves 40 feet/12 meters causing destruction in cities such as Seward. It turns out we had been to four of the cities that were badly hurt, Anchorage, Seward, Homer and Girdwood.

The museum also has a great collection of art from the different areas of the state, and we recommend a visit to anyone going to Anchorage.

The next day, we went out to the airport and boarded a flight for San Francisco.

We drove back north to Anchorage, where we went to the zoo to see animals we missed on our trip, and then we paid a visit to the Anchorage Museum.

Next—about a 5 hour flight to San Francisco Airport.
